Description

This WYG Sparrow Nest Box Pair has been created to support sparrows in a way that reflects their natural behaviour – social birds that still require individual nesting space.

Each box features a 32mm entrance hole, ideal for House Sparrows, and combines a weatherproof outer shell made from 100% recycled plastic with a removable wooden internal nesting chamber. This two-part design protects nests from rain, frost and temperature extremes, while maintaining the natural timber environment sparrows prefer.

Unlike terrace-style nest boxes, which are often dominated by a single aggressive pair, two individual boxes sited close together allow multiple pairs to nest successfully while reducing conflict and disturbance.

Designed and manufactured in the UK, the recycled outer shell is made using agricultural plastic waste such as bale wrap and fertiliser bags, creating a long-lasting wildlife product with a design life measured in decades.

Why two separate boxes work better

Although sparrows live in loose colonies, they are highly territorial at the nest entrance.  Joel’s experience shows that joined “terrace” boxes are frequently under-used, with only one compartment occupied.

By installing two separate boxes a short distance apart, you provide sparrows with choice, reduce competition, and significantly increase the likelihood of both boxes being used.

Where to site

• Fix boxes 2-5 metres high

• Site in a quiet area near hedges, climbers or shrubs

• Face away from prevailing wind and strong midday sun

• Space boxes slightly apart rather than touching

Once sparrows settle, they often return to the same nesting area year after year.

Why it matters

House Sparrow numbers have declined sharply across the UK due to the loss of nesting cavities in modern buildings. Providing well-designed, sensibly sited nest boxes can make a genuine difference – especially in gardens, villages and urban spaces.
