Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) – Native Oxygenator for Wildlife Ponds (Bunch of 5 Strands)

Original price was: £5.95.Current price is: £4.17.

A true UK-native, rootless oxygenator that naturally floats or settles below the surface. Its fine, feathery stems give brilliant cover for tadpoles, newts and fry while helping soak up excess nutrients for clearer water.

🪴 Supplied as a weighted bunch of 5 strands (no basket required).

Description

Rigid Hornwort is a classic native oxygenator for wildlife ponds. With finely divided, whorled leaves and no true roots, it drifts or gently anchors itself among plants and stones. In winter it produces dormant buds (turions) that sink, then re-sprout in spring – so it comes back year after year with minimal fuss. Dense but soft growth makes safe nursery habitat at the pond’s calmest depths, supporting a healthier, more balanced ecosystem.

Where it thrives

  • Light: Sun to partial shade (strongest growth in good light)

  • Water: Still to slow-moving; ideal for naturalistic, fish-light ponds

  • Depth: Typically 30-90 cm below the surface (will adjust itself)

  • Companions: Best alongside a mix of marginals and floaters to share nutrient uptake and provide shade – ask us what’s best for your own pond!

Planting & care

  • Simply drop the weighted bunch into the pond; it will find its level – no baskets needed.

  • Guideline: 2-3 bunches per m² of surface area (new or very fishy ponds may start a little higher; thin later).

  • Let it fill to roughly one-third of the pond volume, then hand-thin and compost the excess.

  • Expect growth to slow in winter as turions form; fresh growth returns in spring.

Safety (important & honest):
Not known as toxic to pets or wildlife; as with any pond work, wash hands after handling. In small, fish-heavy ponds, avoid extreme overstocking – very dense plant biomass can modestly reduce dissolved oxygen at night. NEVER release plants or pond water into natural waterways.

Truth-first wildlife note:
Hornwort won’t “fix” green water alone. It’s a key part of a balanced mix – combine with varied marginal plants, gentle shade, and low nutrient input for clear, living water that supports amphibians and aquatic invertebrates.  We’re right here if you need advice!

Joel says…
“Pop it in and let it get on with it. Hornwort is one of those quiet heroes – proper native, great cover for youngsters, and it keeps spare nutrients busy while the rest of your planting knits together.”

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are ordering perennials between the months of October and March, including aquatic plants, please be aware that this is the dormant phase for perennials, so your plants may arrive showing potentially little or no top growth at this stage, or can in some cases still have some old leaves from last year showing also. Please don’t worry, as this is all quite normal. Once the weather warms up in spring, you will start to see fresh growth and activity! If you ever have any concerns at all, please just message the team on [email protected] and we’ll always do our best to help.
