Description

Common Dog Violet (Viola riviniana) may look modest, but it is one of the most important wildflowers for biodiversity. Flowering from March through May, its violet-purple blooms provide nectar and pollen at a vital time of year when early pollinators are emerging.

Even more significantly, Common Dog Violet is the larval foodplant of several fritillary butterflies, including the rare and declining Pearl-bordered and Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries, as well as the Silver-washed Fritillary. Without this plant, these butterflies cannot complete their life cycles – making it a keystone species in woodland and meadow habitats.

Culturally, violets have long held symbolic meaning, associated with modesty, faithfulness, and spring’s renewal. Though less showy than the Sweet Violet, Common Dog Violet is widespread across the UK and has been part of Britain’s natural heritage for centuries, often carpeting woodland floors and grassy verges.

Easy to grow, it thrives in sun or part-shade, adapting to grassland, borders, hedgerows, or woodland edges. Over time it will spread to create a naturalistic carpet of flowers and foliage, offering beauty and biodiversity.

🪴 Our Common Dog Violets are grown in peat-free super plugs and 9cm pots, supplied strong and well-rooted for reliable establishment.

Joel says…
“Common Dog Violet is a small plant with a big role. It’s absolutely vital for fritillary butterflies, and it’s a great way to bring early colour into grassland or woodland edges. Don’t underestimate it – it’s a really important wildflower. And of course, peat-free plugs and pots mean they’re ready to thrive.”

Although there is a minimum order requirement of 8 plugs when purchasing specific species, if selecting our Super Plug Bespoke Pack, you can select up to 4 species of your choice from our given list to make up a 16 pack (or greater), allowing you a wider choice of plug species if 8 of one is too many. Find the link to our Super Plug Bespoke Pack here!

These SUPER PLUG specimens are available in 8 pack, 16 pack, 32 pack and 48 pack. The 9CM POTS are available individually.

They’re both ready to be shipped to you in a few days.
