Allium angulosum (Mouse Garlic) – Rosy-Pink Drumsticks for Pond Collars (Peat-Free, Pesticide-Free; Non-Native, Garden-Safe)

Description

A neat, clump-forming ornamental allium with slender grassy leaves and rosy-pink pincushion flower heads that hover on wiry stems in midsummer. Unlike many alliums, Allium angulosum is happy on the moist side, so it sits beautifully at the pond collar or in a damp, sunny border (it’s not aquatic). Flowers typically 40 to 60 cm tall above foliage to 20-30 cm, making long-lasting nectar stations for bees, hoverflies and small butterflies. Seed-heads dry neatly for structure or cutting.
Native status: Central/Eastern Europe (non-native in the UK), garden-safe and well-behaved.

Where it thrives

Light: Full sun (tolerates very light shade)
Moisture/Zone: Pond collar / damp border; prefers moist but free-draining mineral loam; avoid waterlogging and submersion
Soil: Peat-free loam with grit; neutral to alkaline suits best

Planting & care

• Plant dormant bulbs/crowns 5-8 cm deep, 10-15 cm apart; or plant pots at the same depth

• Water to establish, then keep evenly moist (not boggy) in summer

• Deadhead if you want to curb self-seeding, or leave seed-heads for winter texture

• Divide clumps every 3 to 4 years in late summer/autumn as leaves die down

• No pesticides; avoid high-salt feeds

Ornamental use only – do not ingest. Like other alliums, parts can be harmful to pets/livestock if eaten. Low risk to handle. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses.

Excellent nectar/pollen for a wide range of bees and hoverflies during a midsummer gap. As a non-native it’s not a larval host; weave through UK natives to keep wildlife value high across the season.
