Description

A statuesque UK native mullein with butter-yellow flowers and striking purple stamens on upright wands from early summer into autumn. Forms a basal rosette first, then sends up 60 – 120 cm flowering spikes the following season (often repeat-blooming if deadheaded). Thrives in dry, sunny ground – perfect for gravel, cottage borders, meadow edges and the dry pond rim (it’s not aquatic). Long-lived when kept on the lean side, self-seeding politely into gaps. Superb for bees, and a larval food plant for several moths, including the mullein moth.

Where it thrives
Light: Full sun
Soil: Free-draining mineral loam/sand/gravel; happiest on poor, alkaline/neutral soils; hates waterlogging
Setting: Dry wildlife borders, gravel gardens, bank tops, dry pond rim, with knapweeds, scabious and wild marjoram

Planting & care

  • Plant into peat-free, gritty loam; do not over-feed (rich soil = floppy stems)

  • Water to establish, then keep on the dry side; drought-tolerant once rooted

  • Deadhead spent florets to prolong the show; leave a few spikes to seed for future plants

  • In windy sites, stake discreetly early

  • Thin seedlings in spring to spacing of 30–45 cm; move small rosettes if needed

  • No pesticides; avoid high-salt feeds

Safety (important & honest):
Ornamental use only – do not ingest. Leaf hairs can irritate sensitive skin; wear gloves. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses.

Truth-first wildlife note:
Nectar-rich open blooms suit bumblebees, solitary bees and hoverflies; seed and dried stems give winter texture. As a native, mullein also supports moth larvae (e.g., mullein moth) – accept some leaf nibble as part of the bargain.

Joel says…
“Think sun and lean soil = perfect spires. Keep it dry, skip the feed, deadhead for months of colour – and let a few seed so you get a fresh batch next year.”
