Description

A classic evening, night-opening wildflower with large lemon-yellow cups that glow at dusk from early summer into autumn. Plants form rosettes in year one, then throw up upright, branching stems 60-120 cm in year two with a long sequence of flowers that draw nocturnal moths (and day visitors on warm mornings). Thrives on lean, well-drained, sunny ground – perfect for dry borders, gravelly edges, meadow plantings and the dry pond rim (it’s not aquatic). Often lightly scented at dusk (varies by strain and weather), and will self-seed politely to keep the display going.
Native status (UK): Long-naturalised non-native from North America; garden-safe and wildlife-helpful when sited sensibly.

Where it thrives
Light: Full sun (needs it)
Soil/Zone: Free-draining, low-fertility mineral loam/sand/gravel; neutral to alkaline; ideal at the dry pond collar / meadow edge; coastal-tolerant

Planting & care

  • Plant peat-free plugs 30-40 cm apart on raked, weed-light ground; water to establish, then keep on the dry side

  • Do not over-feed (rich soil = floppy stems, fewer flowers)

  • Deadhead some spikes to prolong bloom; leave some to seed for future plants and winter interest

  • Stake only in very windy sites; thin volunteer seedlings in spring to spacing

  • No pesticides – this plant supports beneficial insects (hoverflies, parasitic wasps)

Safety (important & honest):
Ornamental use only – do not ingest. Low handling risk; wash hands after gardening. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses.

Truth-first wildlife note:
Open, night-fresh flowers are excellent for nocturnal moths and visitable by bees/hoverflies by day. As a non-native, it carries no UK larval-host role, so pair with native nectar plants to maximise wildlife value.

Joel says…
“Think golden dusk lanterns on lean soil. Full sun, no feed, let a few seed – and you’ll get months of flowers and friendly evening visitors.”
