Joel says…

“Blackthorn is tough for a reason. It flowers when insects are desperate, shelters birds where nothing else will, and holds hedges together year after year. If you’re serious about wildlife, this is one of the plants you build with – not around.”

Description

Blackthorn is one of the earliest and most important native shrubs for wildlife – and one of the toughest.

Long before most plants have even thought about flowering, Prunus spinosa bursts into clouds of white blossom, providing a critical early nectar and pollen source for emerging bees and insects when little else is available.

That early timing is everything.

Its dense, thorny structure creates exceptional shelter for birds, nesting sites protected from predators, and larval food for a wide range of moths and butterflies – including the Brown Hairstreak, one of the UK’s most treasured species.

Later in the year, Blackthorn produces sloes, feeding birds and mammals through autumn and winter, while its tangled growth offers year-round refuge in hedgerows and wild margins.

Supplied in a 2L pot, this Blackthorn is ready to establish as part of a hedge, boundary or wildlife corridor where resilience and ecological value matter more than neatness.

Why Blackthorn matters

Blackthorn supports wildlife across the entire year:

• one of the earliest blossom sources for pollinators
• larval food plant for moths and butterflies
• dense, thorny shelter for nesting birds
• sloes for birds and mammals in autumn and winter
• strong structure for hedgerows and wildlife corridors

It’s a plant that holds space for wildlife when conditions are hardest – early spring, harsh weather, and exposed landscapes.

Where to plant

Blackthorn thrives where it’s allowed to grow naturally.

It’s ideal for:
• hedgerows and boundaries
• wild margins and scrub areas
• larger gardens and rural plots
• wildlife corridors and field edges

It tolerates poor soils and exposed conditions, and once established, is extremely resilient. It’s best planted where its natural, thorny habit is welcomed rather than fought.
