Description

White or Common Valerian is one of Britain’s most underrated native wildflowers – soft, frothy, and absolutely alive with insects when in flower.

Valeriana officinalis produces airy clusters of pale, nectar-rich blooms that seem to hover above the border like mist, drawing in:

  • hoverflies

  • solitary bees

  • bumblebees

  • butterflies

  • night-flying moths

It’s a plant that doesn’t shout – but wildlife hears it loud and clear.

Perfect for meadow edges, wildlife borders, dampish corners, pond margins, and any garden that’s being allowed to soften back into something more natural.

And unlike many “pollinator plants” sold for colour alone, White Valerian is a true ecosystem plant:
it feeds insects, supports food chains, and adds that woodland-meadow feel that makes a garden look settled and alive.

A native perennial with real habitat value

White Valerian thrives in the kinds of places wildlife actually uses – not sterile beds, but living edges:

  • wildflower meadows

  • cottage-style wildlife borders

  • pondside planting

  • lightly shaded margins

  • damper soils where other wildflowers struggle

It returns year after year, building structure and continuity – the kind insects rely on.

Gentle beauty, serious nectar

The flowers may look delicate, but they are packed with nectar and often buzzing with life from morning to dusk.
