Description

A delicate, small-scale UK-native oxygenator, Callitriche stagnalis forms tiny floating rosettes of opposite leaves with fine, thread-like submerged foliage beneath. It gently soaks up spare nutrients, creates micro-habitat and cover for tadpoles, newts and fry, and dots the surface with starry leaf clusters for a natural look. Perfect for wildlife ponds and barrel ponds where a compact oxygenator is ideal. Spreads steadily in clean water and is easy to thin by hand to keep balance.

Where it thrives

• Light: Sun to partial shade (forms best surface rosettes with decent light)

• Water/Depth: Still to slow-moving water; typically 10-40 cm below the surface (shallower encourages rosettes/flowers)

• Setting: Naturalistic ponds with low nutrient input; combine with varied marginals and a touch of surface shade for balance

Planting & care

• Supplied as bunches/portions. Simply sink to position – no basket required

• Starter guide: 1-2 bunches per m² of pond surface (new or fish-heavy ponds may start higher; thin later)

• Let total plant mass reach no more than one-third of pond volume; hand-thin and compost excess through the season

• Growth slows in winter; expect fresh spring regrowth from surviving shoots/seed

Safety (important & honest):
Not for consumption; do not ingest. Wash hands after pond work. Never release plants or pond water into natural waterways.

Truth-first wildlife note:
No oxygenator will clear green water on its own. Water-starwort works best as part of a mixed planting with marginals and gentle surface shade, plus careful nutrient control, for clear, living water.
