Why Wild Your Garden?
Unlike mass-produced plants from commercial growers, our wildflowers come from small, peat-free family nurseries that share our ethos. These growers use no pesticides or herbicides, ensuring plants are safe for wildlife from the moment they arrive in your garden. Joel has used these same trusted growers for over 20 years in his wildlife landscaping projects, so you can be confident they’re tried, tested, and genuinely wildlife-friendly. By buying from Wild Your Garden, you’re also supporting independent growers who put nature first.

Description

Greater Knapweed (Centaurea scabiosa) is one of Britain’s most charismatic meadow flowers, with bold, thistle-like blooms in rich purple that rise above grass and other wildflowers. Flowering from June through September, it provides a long-lasting display and one of the most important nectar sources for a wide range of pollinators.

This hardy perennial is especially loved by butterflies – including the Marbled White, Meadow Brown, and Painted Lady – as well as bees, hoverflies, and beetles. Its flowers are rich in nectar, while its seeds provide food for finches and other seed-eating birds later in the season, making it a true keystone species in wildflower meadows.

Culturally, knapweeds were once valued in traditional remedies (its Latin name “scabiosa” relates to treatments for skin conditions), and they remain much-loved in British folklore as symbols of meadows and midsummer abundance. Unlike true thistles, Greater Knapweed carries no spines, making it as gardener-friendly as it is wildlife-friendly.

Thriving in sunny, well-drained soils, it is a superb choice for wildflower meadows, verges, cottage-style gardens, or naturalistic borders. Over time, it will self-seed to create drifts of colour and activity.

🪴 Our Greater Knapweed is grown in peat-free super plugs and 9cm pots, strong and well-rooted for quick establishment and long-term flowering.

Joel says…
“Greater Knapweed is a real wildlife magnet. On a sunny day you’ll see it covered in butterflies and bees, and it’s one of my go-to plants for adding height and colour to a meadow. It’s reliable, bold, and peat-free – what more could you ask for?”

Although there is a minimum order requirement of 8 plugs when purchasing specific species, if selecting our Super Plug Bespoke Pack, you can select up to 4 species of your choice from our given list to make up a 16 pack (or greater), allowing you a wider choice of plug species if 8 of one is too many.
