Description

A classic UK native for moist ground, Meadowsweet froths with honey-scented, creamy flower plumes from early to late summer above finely cut green foliage. Superb at the pond collar, bog-edge and damp borders (it’s not aquatic), where it forms clumps from short rhizomes – typically 80-120 cm tall (to 150 cm in rich soils). Flowers are alive with bees, hoverflies and day-flying moths; stems left over winter provide structure and refuge. A key nectar plant that partners perfectly with other natives for a long wildlife season.

Where it thrives
Light: Full sun to light/partial shade
Moisture/Zone: Pond collar / bog-edge / damp border; consistently moist humus-rich mineral loam; do not submerge
Soil: Neutral to slightly acidic; clay tolerant; always peat-free

Planting & care

  • Plant into peat-free loam enriched with leaf-mould/composted bark; mulch annually to lock in moisture

  • Water to establish; don’t let it bake in summer

  • Deadhead to tidy, or leave seed-heads for wildlife and winter texture

  • Divide every 3-4 years in spring to refresh clumps or share

  • No pesticides; avoid high-salt feeds

Safety (important & honest):
Ornamental use only – do not ingest. Contains salicylates (aspirin-like); those with sensitivities should handle with care. Keep plant material and soil out of natural watercourses.

Truth-first wildlife note:
An excellent native nectar/pollen source in mid-summer and a good hoverfly magnet; clumps give cover for amphibians and invertebrates at the warm rim. For season-long forage, pair with late flowering natives.

Joel says…
“Think scented cream clouds on the moist collar. Give it leaf-mould and steady moisture, and let a few seed-heads stand for winter life.”
