Joel says…

“Wild Cherry is one of those trees that quietly holds whole ecosystems together. The blossom feeds early insects, the leaves feed caterpillars, and the fruit feeds birds long before people get to it. If you’ve got space for one native tree that really gives back, this would be high on my list.”  More info below:

Description

Wild Cherry is one of Britain’s most valuable native trees – not because it grows fast or looks tidy, but because it supports life at every level.

From early spring blossom feeding emerging pollinators, to caterpillars browsing its leaves, to birds feasting on its cherries in summer, Prunus avium is a true wildlife workhorse. Few native trees offer such a complete, season-long contribution to the food web.

Its open, white blossom is rich in pollen and nectar at a critical time of year, supporting bees, hoverflies and early-emerging insects. The foliage is used by a wide range of moth caterpillars, while the fruit is taken by birds and mammals – often before it ever reaches full ripeness.

Supplied in a 2L pot, this young Wild Cherry is ideal for gardens, orchards, hedgerows and wilded spaces where it can grow into a long-lived, generous tree.

Why Wild Cherry matters

Wild Cherry plays a vital role in native ecosystems:

• early blossom for pollinators
• larval food for moth caterpillars
• summer fruit for birds and mammals
• structure for nesting and shelter
• leaf litter that enriches soil life

Unlike ornamental cherries bred for colour or form, Prunus avium remains ecologically intact – feeding wildlife rather than just pleasing the eye.

Where to plant

Wild Cherry prefers space and light, but it’s remarkably adaptable.

It thrives in:
• sun or light shade
• free-draining soils (including chalk and loam)
• larger gardens, orchards and wild margins
• hedgerows and field boundaries

It’s best planted where it can grow naturally without heavy pruning. Given time, it becomes a graceful tree with real presence – and real purpose.
